Objectives

Development of core research programmes in areas of economic benefit to the Area.

We are creating joint RTD schemes and training programmes which will not only upgrade the existing labour force but also prepare people to take advantage of the new technologies that are on the horizon. For example, one of the major themes of the EU Framework 6 programme is the development of nanotechnologies. The outcome of these projects will have a dramatic effect on the technologies available in the ceramics and polymer industries and there will be significant economic advantages to the Area’s industries if they can be at the forefront. MNAA regards nanotechnology as one of its major areas of expertise.

Provision of an integrated EU-wide materials characterisation and trouble-shooting service.

We are providing a quality research and technology support service to industry, especially to SMEs and can provide leadership in overcoming geographic isolation through ‘virtual laboratory’ working. Our database of available expertise and facilities demonstrates the wide capabilities of MNAA.

Development of regional and discipline-based networks

The long-term vision is for new, high technology industries to cluster around the individual centres of excellence that make up MNAA and bring with them the engine for economic growth that will provide quality employment in the region. This network is seen to be the first of several potential academic/industrial partnerships that could deliver economic benefits to the region.

Materials Ireland Research Centre - a commercial, technical research and development and technology transfer centre providing consultancy support relating to industrial materials to Irish industry. It has strong links, particularly with SMEs, and coordinates national industry sector networks on Ceramics and Glasses and Biomaterials and Biomedical Devices.

Materials Centre South West - formed between the Universities of Exeter and Bristol, the venture is aimed at strengthening materials support for SMEs in the South West of England.
